area south of the Middle Hills (foothills of the Himalayas) is a relatively
flat area. For centuries, the only people that could inhabit the land were the
Tharu people, who have a natural immunity to malaria. This disease was
eradicated over 60 years ago and since them other ethnic groups have moved in.

Elephant Safari – Travel through the jungle on the back of an elephant to give you close
up views of the various jungle animals. From your high perspective, you have
wonderful visibility. It is also the safest way to see tigers and rhinos close
up as those animals will never bother an elephant.

Jungle Walk –Spend a day or two roaming the jungles with your trained, licensed guide. This
is the best way to see the unique animals of the jungle. Your guide will take
you to various watering holes where you can watch for tigers, wild elephants,
rhinos, deer and more.

Elephant Breeding Grounds – Rhino Lodge Bardia is located within a short walking
distance of the elephant breeding grounds where you can see baby elephants and
learn more about these giant, but very gentle creatures of the jungle.

Crocodile Breeding Center – Bardia National Park is home of two types of
crocodiles, including the endangered gharial crocodile. This strange looking
crocodile has a long, narrow snout studded with sharp teeth. This croc is a
fish eater, and the female lays the largest egg of all crocodiles. Here you can
see gharial as well as the more common marsh mugger.

Bird Watching –There are over 400 varieties of birds in Bardia National Park, including some
that come for the winter or are part of the seasonal migrations from Siberia.
Bardia is very popular with bird watchers because of its remoteness as well as
the sheer number of birds that can be seen.

Jeep Safari –
Travel deep into the jungle in an open air jeep where you can see many

Rafting Safari Trips – There are wonderful rafting trips down the Karnali
River. Beginning at the bridge at Chisapani, the Karnali River widens out and
becomes a slow, jungle river where you can watch the animals come to the
water’s edge to drink. These trips can also be combined with short jungle walks
into the park from the Karnali River with your experienced jungle guide.

Butterfly Watching – Bardia National Park features over species of colorful butterflies,
including many that are only indigenous to this region.

Fishing Trip down the Babai River Valley – Overnight in a camping trip on the river. Spend
several days floating down the Babai River as it cuts a beautiful valley with
its deep waters filled with over 15 varieties of fish. Each night, enjoy fresh
fish over an open fire.

Photography Safari – There is no better place to look for wild animals than Bardia National
Park. Hunt with your camera. Our guides can set you up in secluded, camouflaged
locations where you can set up your tripod and long lens to capture some
stunning wild animal scenes.

Explore a Tharu Village – The Tharu people of the Terai region have lived here
for hundreds of years. Originally believed to have come here to the jungle to
escape persecution from raiding Muslim bands, they were able to survive in the
jungle because they have a natural resistance to malaria. This disease was
eradicated from the Terai over 60 years ago, but these hardy people know and
have adapted to the jungle. Their villages will welcome you as they show you
their unique lifestyle. There is also a
Tharu museum in the park as well as nightly Tharu Cultural Shows at Rhino Lodge
Bardia.
